My journey with the Linux Operating System

It was my working colleague Lai Kun Keong who introduced me to UNIX/Unix Operating System for the first time at the PHILIPS Service Centre in Petaling Jaya. Lai Kun Keong was the Computer Engineer (Computer Hardware and Maintenance) who was involved in the installation, maintenance and trouble-shooting and pre-sale testing of SCO Unix Server for the Public Bank Project in Malaysia. If I am not mistaken, this happen sometime between 1989 to 1990. He installed the SCO Unix Operating System on a DIGITAL DEC400xP computer hardware (Intel 80486-based server machine). This machine has a 3.5 inch floppy drive, a SCSI hard disk drive, a QIC-525 tape drive and Adaptec SCSI controller card (I could not remember what Model it was but I belief it was an Adaptec 2940 SCSI Controller Card). The SCO Unix Operating System comes in with a QIC-525 format tape and it is installed on a DIGITAL DEC400xP (Intel 80486-based server) using a QIC-525 tape drive which is already built-in , in the Server. In 1992 when DIGITAL/DEC/Digital Equipment Corporation bought over Philips Data Systems Division worldwide, majority of the Philips Data Systems staff in Malaysia were absorbed into DIGITAL(M) Sdn. Bhd. When I join DIGITAL from Philips Data Systems, it is sad that I do not have any Systems experience at the OS level (Operating System level) because the Philips Data Systems environment is purely a hardware environment (PHILIPS mini-computer hardware, PHILIPS printer hardware, PHILIPS Concentrator hardware, PHILPS/ControlData hard disk drive hardware, etc., etc., etc.), meaning , I do not need or I do not require any basic Operating Systems knowledge in order to provide installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of Philips Data Systems products (Philips Data Systems computer hardware). When I was working with DIGITAL I found out that DIGITAL had many customers using various kinds of Operating Systems sitting on different kind of computer hardware. Among them are Windows 95 Operating System, Windows 98 Operating System, Windows NT4 Operating System, VMS Operating System, Ultrix Operating System, Digital Unix Operating System. So, when I am working with DIGITAL, whenever I was assigned a service call in order to provide installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of DIGITAL computer hardware, I can see that it is good to have a basic Systems experience at the OS level (Operating System level) in these Operating Systems like for example Windows 95 OS, Windows 98 OS, Windows NT4 OS, VMS OS, Ultrix OS, Digital Unix OS in order to troubleshoot and repair DIGITAL computer hardware, regardless whether it is a DIGITAL personal computer, DIGITAL Engineering Workstation, DIGITAL printers, or a DIGITAL minicomputer, etc., etc., etc. So, to get some basic Systems experience, I have to start somewhere. I found out about Linux Operating System when I was working with DIGITAL and since I have some basic UNIX experience while playing with SCO Unix in my house (I asked Lai Kun Keong to help me to install SCO Unix OS on my 80386 machine) so , switching to Linux Operating Systems and learning about Linux Operating Systems to get some basic Systems experience would make sense. The rest is history. Currently, the Linux Operating System distro that I used are , KNOPPIX 8.6 , KNOPPIX 9.1 , Ubuntu 22.04 and PCLinuxOS [ 1 ]
By God's grace , I met Lai Kun Keong on Tuesday 16th.August 2016 at one of the entrance door of IKEA Damansara with my daughter Nurul Hayati. We have never seen each other for about 20 years after I left DIGITAL to work for another Company.

IT Assistant at Chungco Technology Sdn Bhd - Performed PM (Preventive Maintenance), installation, maintenance and trouble-shooting of HSBC Desktop Computers and Laptop computers. Installation of computer hardware peripherals such as printers, scanners, etc. Installation and update of software for HSBC users when necessary. Provide IT service calls or field-support to HSBC Branches within Kuala Lumpur. Working with Chungco Technology is like a trip down memory lane because I didn't expect to provide IT services to a banking customer which I have provided many years ago. HSBC was one of the major banking customers for the Philips Data Systems computer hardware not a long time ago.

Why I think I can contribute to a job :

I can provide general support and maintenance for LAN/WAN related issues for the Company

I can work side by side with the young and with the old and with different races and religion and interact with individuals from all parts of the globe.

I am eager to learn new technologies, especially Linux Operating System, Windows 10 Operating System , Windows 11 Operating System , fixed-wireless technology and broadband . It is good to have a basic understanding of these new technologies because it makes me well-rounded, it broaden my knowledge, and I believe I can maximize my skills for the benefit of the Company and at the same time I can provide value added services for the Company.

I have a good sense of humour. I sill enjoy a good laugh when I get the joke

I am honest, sincere and trustworthy and I can contribute ideas, creativity and give suggestions where appropriate according to my capability.

I want to have a long term commitment with the Company. I am 67 years of age and Insha'Allah (if God willing), if God give me the longevity and a healthy body , I believe I can contribute another 5 years for the Company .

I am willing to accept a lower pay package in exchange for the opportunity to grow and learn with the Company.

Finally, I need a job to raise a family.

Linux OS _ My Linux Operating System wishlist ( 1 ) _ I hope the Linux OS developers and maintainers are moving forward quickly in making the Linux Operating System an all-inclusive ecosystem that is richly functional for users/consumers at all ends of the computing spectrum , so that in the not too distant future , connecting a Linux PC/Desktop , , connecting a Linux Laptop , connecting a Linux Tablet , connecting a Linux Smartphone , connecting a Linux Folding Smartphone , connecting a Linux 5G Cellular Laptop , like for example the [ 15.6 inches " 360 degrees foldable " INTEL-based Linux OS 5G Cellular Laptop with built-in DVD-RW Player ] to a USB printer ( Home Printer and Departmental Printer ) , to a USB scanner , to a USB flatbed scanner , to a USB TV Tuner , to a Digital Camera , to a External USB DVD-RW drive , to a External USB Blu-ray drive , to any bluetooth devices , etc., etc., is not a too difficul task , just like a Windows Operating System . As of today , August 2022 , in my opinion , the connect-everything OS , the do-everything OS , the most user-friendly OS and the most popular OS on the planet is still Windows Operating System , regardless whether it is Windows 10 Operating System or Windows 11 Operating System and I believe Linux Operating System can do the same thing , too , regardless of what Linux Distro is preinstalled on a Linux machine .
Linux OS _ My Linux Operating System wishlist (2) _ I hope the Linux OS developers and maintainers (regardless of the Linux Distro) , and hardware manufacturer of products like graphics card ( especially high-end graphics card ) , USB printer ( Home Printer and Departmental Printer ) , USB scanner , USB flatbed scanner , USB TV Tuner and others , will collaborate with each other ( Linux OS developers/maintainers and hardware device manufacturer ) to ensure that installing Linux drivers for a particular hardware device , is as painless as possible and with 100% success . As of today , June 2023 , installing Linux drivers for a particular hardware is still a nightmare (more) , with lots of errors , dependency problems , sometimes the Linux OS break , etc., etc., etc. In other words , installing a specific hardware/card or a hardware device in a Linux system ( regardless whether it is a Linux PC/Desktop or a Linux Laptop or a Linux Tablet or a Linux Engineering Workstation ) is really a struggle and it is not for the faint of the heart . How I wish one fine day , installing Linux drivers for a specific hardware or a particular hardware device ( sometimes we can have 2 or 3 different hardware device/card inside a Linux PC/Desktop, inside a Linux Laptop , inside a Linux Tablet, inside a Linux Engineering Workstation. ) inside a Linux computer system ( regardless whether it is a Linux PC/Desktop or a Linux Laptop or a Linux Tablet or a Linux Engineering Workstation ) will be as easy as installing a .exe file , just like in Windows Operating System, with no errors , with no dependency problems , etc., etc., AND IT JUST WORKS .

Troubleshoot Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 8.6 which is installed on a 32 GB SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 regarding why I cannot clone this 32 GB Thumbdrive to a 2.5 " 160 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive . Basically , the 32 GB Thumbdrive and the 2.5 " 160 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive is connected to the USB port of a Motherboard , regardless whether it is a USB 2.0 port or a USB 3.0 port . The 2.5 " 160 GB Sata Hard Disk Drive is connected to a USB port of a Motherboard with the help of a 2.5 " Hard Disk Drive Enclosure . Cloning ( I used Clonezilla Software ) the 32 GB Thumbdrive to the 2.5 " 160 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive ( fixed with a Hard Disk Drive Enclosure which is then connected to a USB port of the Motherboard ) was not successful , so , I had to remove the 2.5 " 160 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive from the 2.5 " Hard Disk Drive Enclosure and connect the 2.5 " 160 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive directly to the SATA Data Cable and SATA Power Cable of the Motherboard and after that the Cloning ( using Clonezilla software ) was successful . Problem fixed .

Then try to clone this Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 7.2 to another 3.5 inch sata hard drive 80 GB connected to usb to sata/ide adapter. I use the MSI GE70 computer hardware as a platform for cloning the hard drives. The software that I use for cloning on the MSI GE70 hardware is Clonezilla. With Clonezilla, the first method I use was disk-to-disk cloning and the second method I use was the backup/restore. However, both methods use do not give good results. I could not get an exact replica of the 60 GB hard disk on the 80 GB hard disk. Clonezilla can only cloned 2 usb hard disk drives if one of them is installed with Windows Operating System (Windows XP/Vista/7/8). With Acronis True Image Home 2009, the first method I use was disk-to-disk cloning and it does not give good results either and the second method I use was the backup/restore. Fantastic. Awesome. The backup/restore method works. I managed to get an exact replica of the 60 GB hard disk on the 80 GB hard disk. To make the Linux OS KNOPPIX 7.2 recognise the remaining 20 GB hard disk space, I use the Gparted software. Cloning 2 usb hard disk drives with Acronis True Image Home 2009 works fine too provided if one of the usb hard disk drives is installed with Windows Operating System (Windows XP/Vista/7/8).

Using VMware Workstation 10, I found out that playing songs on You Tube using the Firefox browser on the host operating system (installed Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 7.2 as the host operating system) and working on my blog on the guest operating system (installed Windows XP Operating System as the guest operating system) did not cause the audio to hangup or jilted or screech to a halt. I scrolled the page on my blog up and down rapidly on my Windows XP Guest OS and it did not hang up the audio on the Linux KNOPPIX 7.2 Host OS. But if I play songs on You Tube using Firefox browser on my Windows XP Guest OS and at the same time I am working on my blog on the Windows XP Guest OS and if I were to scroll the page on my blog up and down rapidly, the audio or the sound coming out from You Tube will hang momentarily. But if I did not scroll, the audio coming out from You Tube will be smooth as usual.

The reason I wanted to do this is because when I boot from my 80GB sata hard disk drive , I wanted the Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 7.4 boot options to appear. After reboot , the KNOPPIX 7.4 boot options will not appear if I do a fresh install of Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 7.4 on the 80 GB sata hard disk drive . But if I were to install Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 7.4 on the 32GB SanDisk flash drive , I can get the KNOPPIX 7.4 boot options to appear after I reboot from the usb flash drive. There must be some other way to get the boot options to appear when doing a fresh install of Linux OS Knoppix 7.4 on the 80 GB sata hard disk drive. Currently this is the only method that I can think of , that is , to clone the 32GB flash drive to a 80 GB sata hard disk drive for the Linux KNOPPIX 7.4 boot options to appear after a reboot. Troubleshoot lock problem in Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 7.4
Used the Linux Operating System System Utility ' dd ' to clone the 80GB sata hard disk drive
ACER Aspire R15 15.6 inches (360 degrees foldable) [ 1 ] is friends with Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 8.2 Set the UEFI/BIOS from AHCI to Legacy . Then connect an External DVD-RW Player to the USB Port of the ACER Aspire R15 15.6 inches . Insert a ' bootable ' Linux Operating System KNOPPIX 8.2 inside the External DVD-RW Player which is connected to the USB Port of the ACER Aspire R15 15.6 inches . RESTART or SWITCH ON the power of the ACER Aspire R15 15.6 inches then after BOOTUP type in the KNOPPIX 8.2 Cheatcode " knoppix64 toram xmodule=svga " when " Knoppix : " is displayed on the screen . The ACER Aspire R15 15.6 inches will load all the entire Linux OS KNOPPIX 8.2 and all the Linux application software that is inside the KNOPPIX 8.2 bootable DVD to a RAM drive , meaning , the entire Linux OS KNOPPIX 8.2 can be operated inside a RAM drive . The amount of RAM inside the ACER Aspire R15 (15.6 inches) must have 8GB or more in order for this to work . As a result , the existing Windows 10 Operating System 64-bit that is preinstalled inside the ACER Aspire R15 (15.6 inches) laptop will not be affected After we have have finished doing what we wanted to do with the Linux OS KNOPPIX 8.2 inside the ACER Aspire R15 (15.6 inches) Laptop , just shutdown the Linux OS KNPPIX 8.2 , disconnect the External DVD-RW Player and RESTART the ACER Aspire R15 (15.6 inches) , then we are back to Windows 10 Operating System .

Today , there are software/apps that can help us to make phone calls directly from our 5G Laptop but we got to have a 5G smartphone and a 5G Laptop in order to do that . That means having to buy a 5G smartphone and having to buy a 5G Laptop in order to do that. But if we have a 5G Cellular Laptop that I envisioned that can make telephone calls and answer/reply phone calls directly on them , without the need of a 5G smartphone , without having to rely on a 5G smartphone, without the need to buy/purchase a 5G smartphone , without the help of a 5G smartphone , it would be great. The 5G Cellular Laptop , that I envisioned , is thin and light and slim and sleek , " 360 degrees foldable " or "detachable" , can "auto-rotate" in LANDSCAPE MODE or PORTRAIT MODE , and have a " touchscreen " , and have a 15.6 inches screen size . As for me , I would still prefer a 5G Cellular Laptop that is "360 degrees foldable" because a "360 degrees foldable" 5G Cellular Laptop can be converted into a 5G Cellular Tablet swiftly (without detaching the screen like this or this ) and can be operated in various mode as shown here and here . The 5G Cellular Laptop that i envisioned must have a built-in DVD-RW Player [ 1 2 ] , preferably INTEL-based SoC/processor/microprocessor running INTEL-based Windows 10 Operating System 1 (not ARM-based processor/SoC running ARM-based Windows 10 Operating System), with built-in 5G modem [ 1 2 ] and has a 5G SIM / nano SIM Card Slot or eSIM , that 5G Cellular Laptop must have a phone dialer and when we subscribe to a Cellular Data Plan [ 1 ] from an Internet Service Provider that come with a phone number or a personal phone number , we can dial a phone number on the 5G Cellular Laptop 15.6 inches Touchscreen just like what we do on a 5G smartphone , so much so that we can use that 5G Cellular Laptop to make phone calls to someone or to anyone or to a l andline telephone using his/her phone number and we can use that 5G Cellular Laptop to answer phone calls from someone or from anyone or from a landline telephone , directly on that 5G Cellular Laptop , just like a 5G smartphone . No 5G smartphone needed because we do nt have to rely on a 5G smartphone for phone functionality . Since that kind of 5G Cellular Laptop is "360 degrees foldable " , that 5G Cellular Laptop can serve as a Laptop , it can serve as a Tablet and above all or BEST OF ALL , it can serve as a 5G Smartphone . Meaning , we can make phone calls and answer phone calls directly on that 5G Cellular Laptop , just like a 5G smartphone , either in LAPTOP MODE or in TABLET MODE or in TENT MODE or in STAND MODE . In my opinion , as of today January 2025 , with the advent of 5G , IoT , nanotechnology , neural networks and AI , implementing a voice/telephone-calling feature (just like a 5G smarttphone) in a Laptop and calling it a 5G Cellular Laptop , is not an extra fancy feature anymore and it should be standard in all 5G Cellular Laptops sold in the market today , regardless of the Operating System being used , regardless whether it is INTEL-based or ARM-based , regardless of screen size , regardless whether it is "360 degrees foldable" or "detachable".
