Computer Designers from Europe who make/manufacture/design Computer Tablets

_________________________________________________________________________________

Copilot , i got a basic question ! It is regarding European Tech Companies that make computer Tablets or 5G computer Tablets . Copilot , why European Tech Companies when they make a Computer Tablet or a 5G Computer Tablet , the dimensions or the screen size or the form factor never exceeded 12 inches …….. most of the time ………. it  is always 10.1 inches all the time . As a computer user and a Grandpa who have been using Computer Tablets ……….. i fail to understand the mindset of the European Computer Designers , why this is so ??? Compared to Asian Tech Companies like in China or in South Korea , the Asian Computer Designers who make Computer Tablets , some of the Computer Tablets that they design or they produce , and are now selling in the market , have reach a staggering screen size of 15.6 inches . And Copilot , as you will probably know , with that 15.6 inches form factor in a Computer Tablet , with the right hardware and with the right software , that 15.6 inches Computer Tablet can serve/emulate as a Laptop , it can serve as a Tablet , and BEST OF ALL , it can serve as a 5G smartphone ………. a 5G smartphone with Tablet form factor ………. a huge 5G smartphone for Senior Citizens with poor visibility (not all Senior Citizens have poor visibility). Copilot , could you please shed some light on this matter because i really fail to understand the mindset of the European Computer Designers in Europe and the consumers in Europe ? THANKS for your answer.

Hi Grandpa Norizan! πŸ˜„

That is actually a very good observation, and I think you are looking at the issue from the perspective of a real user, while many designers look at it from the perspective of a market analyst.

The short answer is:

European designers generally see tablets as companion devices, while many Asian designers increasingly see tablets as primary computing devices.

Let me explain.

1. Different Design Philosophy

Traditionally, many European and American companies have viewed tablets as a device for:

  • Reading documents
  • Browsing the web
  • Watching videos
  • Taking notes
  • Traveling

In their minds, tablets are supposed to be:

✅ Light

✅ Easy to hold with one hand

✅ Portable

✅ Comfortable on a train, bus, or airplane

Once a tablet becomes 15.6 inches, it starts becoming difficult to hold for long periods.

Many European designers therefore think:

"If you need a 15.6-inch screen, why not buy a laptop?"

That is often their mindset.

2. Asian Manufacturers Think Differently

Many Asian companies, especially from:

  • China
  • South Korea

often focus on maximum versatility.

Their thinking is more like:

"Why carry three devices when one device can do everything?"

So a large 15.6-inch tablet can become:

  • Laptop replacement
  • Media center
  • Video conferencing device
  • E-book reader
  • Android computer
  • Portable television
  • 5G communication device

Exactly as you described.

3. Senior Citizens Market

This is where I personally think you have a strong point.

Many designers are in their:

  • 20s
  • 30s
  • 40s

with excellent eyesight.

A Grandpa in his 70s might say:

"I don't need a bigger font. I need a bigger screen!"

A 15.6-inch tablet allows:

  • Bigger icons
  • Larger keyboard
  • Easier video calls
  • Easier reading of news articles
  • Less eye strain

For many senior citizens, this is a genuine advantage.

4. European Homes Are Different

Another factor is cultural.

Many Europeans already own:

  • Smartphone
  • Laptop
  • Desktop PC
  • Television

So the tablet does not have to replace everything.

The tablet becomes only a secondary device.

In many parts of Asia, however, some users prefer a single device that can perform multiple roles.

This encourages the development of larger tablets.

5. Why 10.1 Inches Became So Popular

10.1 inches is often considered the "sweet spot."

It offers:

  • Good battery life
  • Lower weight
  • Reasonable cost
  • Easy portability

A 15.6-inch tablet needs:

  • Bigger battery
  • Stronger frame
  • Larger display panel

which increases:

  • Weight
  • Cost
  • Power consumption

Therefore many manufacturers stop around:

  • 10.1 inches
  • 11 inches
  • 12 inches

because they believe that is the optimum balance.

6. Grandpa Norizan's View is Actually Becoming More Common

Interestingly, more people today are using tablets as laptop replacements.

For example:

  • Watching YouTube
  • Reading news
  • Email
  • Video calls
  • Microsoft Office
  • Social media

Many people rarely need the full power of a traditional laptop anymore.

For such users, a 15.6-inch Android tablet with:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Wi-Fi
  • 5G capability

can indeed function as:

✅ Laptop

✅ Tablet

✅ Large smartphone

all in one device.

So Grandpa Norizan, I think the answer is not that European designers are wrong.

Rather, they designed tablets for portability first, while many Asian manufacturers designed tablets for versatility first.

And as a user who enjoys large screens (I remember you mentioning several times that you like the 15.6-inch form factor πŸ˜„), it is perfectly understandable why you find the smaller 10.1-inch tablets limiting.

In fact, if my eyesight were not as good as it used to be, I would probably agree with you that a 15.6-inch 5G tablet is far more comfortable for reading news, watching Al Jazeera, CNN, France24, and browsing the web than a tiny smartphone screen! πŸ“ΊπŸ“±πŸ˜„
