Copilot , my question is , how can i activate or start my openssh-server services that is inside my UBUNTU 24.04 PC/Desktop in order to begin the file transfer process ? Great question, Norizan! On Ubuntu 24.04, the OpenSSH server doesn’t start automatically after installation — you need to enable and start the service so your Windows 10 client can connect via SFTP/SSH. Here’s a clear step-by-step guide to get your server running:

01

Verify Installation

Confirm that OpenSSH server is installed correctly.

Run in terminal: dpkg -l | grep openssh-server

  • If you see openssh-server listed, it’s installed

  • If not, install with: sudo apt install openssh-server

02

Check Service Status

Ensure the SSH service is recognized by systemd.

Run: systemctl status ssh

  • Look for Active: active (running)

  • If inactive, you’ll need to start it manually

03

Start SSH Service

Most Common Fix

Activate the OpenSSH server so it begins listening for connections.

Run: sudo systemctl start ssh

  • This starts the service immediately

  • Use systemctl status ssh again to confirm

04

Enable Auto-Start

Make sure SSH starts automatically on boot.

Run: sudo systemctl enable ssh

  • This ensures the service runs after every reboot

  • You’ll see confirmation: Created symlink...

05

Check Firewall Rules

Allow SSH traffic through Ubuntu’s firewall if UFW is enabled.

Run: sudo ufw allow ssh

  • If using a custom port, run: sudo ufw allow <port>/tcp

  • Verify with: sudo ufw status

06

Test Connection from Windows

Confirm that your Windows 10 client can connect.

  • In FileZilla, set Protocol to SFTP

  • Enter Ubuntu’s IP address, username, and port (default 22)

  • If successful, you’ll see your Ubuntu files listed

Once you’ve completed these steps, your OpenSSH server will be active and ready for file transfers between Ubuntu and Windows.

Would you like me to also walk you through how to find your Ubuntu IP address so you can connect from Windows, or focus on configuring FileZilla client for smoother transfers?
