a sim card can be used with a USB internet modem(commonly called as dongle).which is used to connect to internet.
from there you are also able to call someone, recieve text messages and use it for internet connectivity as well.

Yes, you can make a call via laptop or PC using a SIM card, you will require a Dongle(Example: MTS, Huawei, TataPhoton etc) in which you can insert the SIM card and then connect it to you laptop. After connecting the Dongle you need to run the built in dongle software. After successful installation you may go ahead and make calls.
If your laptop has a WWAN adapter , it would be able to use “CELLULAR MODE” and in device manager, usually will say INTEL (R) XM(TM) 7360 LTE-A or something like so that will say LTE or 3G on it.
For HP, most of them are using a super slim nano sized sim card and located on the left side near the power button
or on the right.
Push it open and it will pop out. These are for HP Elitebook model 1030 and 860.
As for DELL, you need to pop the chasis open. AFAIK, Most are located INSIDE and near the WWAN adapter itself and its an old school Micro-SIM adapter.
Be very careful on these.
Then make sure you go to cellular and set manually your APN so the modem can understand which Access Point Network is to go to.

This is the sim card module for standard DELL LATITUDE 7480 (all latitude have similar) and uses MICRO SIM CARD which is the mid size SIM.
On the motherboard itself, notice the 2 dangling antenna sockets? It’s supposed to connect to the WWAN adapter which is far bigger than the WiFi module and it uses a standard M2 PCIE socket.
And this is how the module looks like as I pop one out from a HP Elitebook x360 G6 830 model.
These modules are INTERCHANGABLE and you can see the IMEI number of the device.
And if you open your device manager, it will come as that Generic Mobile Adapter by Microsoft. Don’t ask me in details about other device drivers but you can try use the Chinese Driver Genius to detect.
To use your internet, type Cellular and it should show Change Cellular Settings
Then go to Advanced Options to put in your APN Settings by add Apn.
If you set it correct, then it will select the LTE APN in this case e-ideas for singtel and “phone” for AT&T in US *(as an example).
So next time before you dispose your laptop, make sure these are taken out as they are inter exchangeable.

I can think of two approaches:
- Get a 3G (or better) ‘dongle’ (modem) with voice capability. This is a USB device (it looks like a thumb drive) with a SIM slot. Its primary purpose is providing internet access using mobile data. However, most models can also be used for voice calls and SMS. In many cases, this function is disabled but can be unlocked with proper software. For example, see Journey Bytes: How to Make and Pick Calls with Your Huawei Modem .
- Buy a junk phone with Bluetooth and put your SIM in. Connect your computer to the phone via Bluetooth (if not built into your PC, get a USB Bluetooth adapter. You can then use the mic and speakers on your PC to speak and listen. With the proper software, you can also dial from the PC. You might find a phone at a very low price with a cracked screen or defective mic or earpiece, which should still be fine for this application.

Assuming it’s unlocked & activated you can use it to connect to a mobile network with any SIM that works in the country. However it may not be activated as many laptops from Dell, IBM and so on are made with SIM slots to make them portable devices though are not working with the additional hardware to connect to a mobile network as this inevitably increases the price of the laptop.
Easiest thing to do is check the DELL Service Code on the Dell support site and see whether that laptop does have a mobile data enabled hardware configuration.
They provide a soul to the body(Mobile) and a divine connection with the Almighty(Operator).
So without a SIM card, you can have a phone with all funtionality except wireless connectivity(except wifi & bt)

SIM card slot on a laptop is for data. The manufacturer will give you modem drivers which will help you use the mobile data from that particular SIM card.
Check the driver software provided by the manufacturer. Some of them may provide a program to make phone calls (some external SIM card dongle manufacturers provide this feature). Most manufacturers provide an SMS and contact storage option. If the laptop is using in-built Windows generic drivers for the SIM card, then no call/SMS is possible - you can only use it for data.
As User-13236025839879124874 says. it is usually in or near the battery compartment, but not all laptops have a datacard. However, the datacard is usually a standard internal PC Express card so if there’s an available port on the motherboard they are around £50 to buy.
Calling from mobile using computer is not available in all mobiles.mostly all the mobiles do posses this feature-
- First you need to install the pc suite of your mobile.
- Then connect the mobile using data cable(fast) or bluetooth(comparatively slow).
- Synchronise all the details like contacts,messages.if required photos,songs can also be synchronised.
- Look for calling option in the help menu(for nokia suite calling is done from contact menu).
- Call the number and use microphone to talk.the same can be done via mobile speaker,earphone etc.
That's one of the models I support. The 255 doesn't have an internal WWAN capability but you can use a USB WWAN card with it for the same functionality. By the way, they're on sale right now (15 December) in the Americas region so I'd jump on it if you're considering buying one because they've got them priced to move.

No. A SIM card is a passport. It allows you to access the network, and it helps to ensure that you don't fall for a fake network (like an IMSI catcher). All your details, your tariffs, volumes, bundles, and what have you, are in the core network database. The key to that record is your IMSI, stored on the SIM card.
An active sim will include talk, text and data or data only.
Once a data only sim exhausts the data you might be able to renew your data plan or add another data plan. You should ask before purchase.
Once a talk, text, data sim finishes the data, you will still have talk and text until the plan period is finished. Again you might be able to add or renew.
This question is so wide and because each carrier sets their own parameters, there is no one definitive answer to the question. The rules that apply to one company will not for certain apply to the next company.

Many laptops have built in SIM Slots for Data Usage. Such a feature is mainly confined to the Buisness Laptop range but is also seen in many daily use ones too!!
Just Google for some Asus or Lenovo laptoos and surely you woukd find quite a lot with a slot for SIM cards.
